Everything you need to know and may really want to know about the Edgars!

What are The Edgars?

I was sick of seeing people that had been one of the most influential people in the movie only get a supporting actor nomination in the Oscars. Jennifer Connelly had become supporting actress for A Beautiful Mind, while she had been the highest actress in that movie. I've now learned that it's the movie themselves that sends in who should be nominated for what, but that doesn't really matter now, does it?

Also, many people thought Jim Carrey should have gotten a nomination for Man in the Moon. However, because it's a comedy, it wasn't noticed. All the Oscars seem to honor are incredibly depressing dramas.

So, I decided to make my own movie awards to honor the people and movies who aren't noticed by the Oscars.

Wait a second. Edgars? Extremely Awesome Movie Awards? What does this all mean?

Don't worry, you're not losing your mind. They're all the same thing, like some existential individuality test or something. The original name for the award was the Edgars, but when we realized that there already was an Edgar award, given to that fabulous world of mystery writing (you know, named after Poe and such), we decided to change it. Finally after a few years, one of our affiliated members Robert Killion came up with the name "The Extremely Awesome Movie Awards" since, well, they are awesome. And as a matter of fact, they're extremely awesome. So it stuck. And you can call the awards whatever you want. You can stick with the old name Edgar until we get sued for millions of dollars, but because it's like the Oscar=Academy Award, or Edgar=Extremely Awesome, it works still. So use Edgar if you like. Or if you don't feel like saying "Extremely Awesome Movie Award" a thousand times, you can also say "EAMA". Like an abbreviation. Which is always fun to do. And EAMA sounds somewhat like a new kind of llama or something, so it's extremely awesome.

Why make another awards show? Aren't there enough already?

Well, I know that there are Sci-Fi Awards shows, there's the Golden Globes with their Comedy and Drama categories, and I'm sure millions of other movie awards shows.

It's just that they never recognize the ones I want. So, back in January 2002, I started picking categories that I would want to see. Then I picked the people who would go in them. Thus, I had my awards show.

Wait. Why have I never heard of this before, and there have already been a couple of Edgars already?

Well, of course I needed voters for that first show. So I used my family and myself. I guess, it was just a testing ground for the awards. It worked well enough for my tastes, so I brought it to a couple of my friends. I also put it online, made this site, and was able to get people from the polling site where I hosted the initial voting system. So I had about 5 the first year, then 20 the next year.

The next year, I generally asked anyone I talked to in school, even if they weren't a close friend. I also asked people on several websites devoted to Star Wars, which I frequented. With my family, friends, classmates, Star Wars fans, extra people from the polling site, and anyone I didn't know had voted, I ended up with 75 people voting.

So I'm looking to make that number larger every year. I'm sure I can get at least fifty every year, hopefully.

Where did you get the name Edgar?

Well, it's a long story, and I'll probably never tell any of you.

So don't ask again.

However, as mentioned before, so as to avoid legal matters, we realized the name was used for mystery writers, but it sticks like that whole Oscar=Academy Award thing, so if you have beef, just talk to me, and I'll stop using the name.

Why do you keep calling it a "show"? When will it be aired?

Well, it's not a show. Yet. We're working on that. And we might actually finally have a show, this March. Maybe. If everything works out. Until further notice, however, there are no shows. And no physical awards. I mean, I've never actually met Steven Spielberg, etc....but we might mail out some sort of documentation to the winners this year, as well as the backlogged members if we do have a show. We'll see.

Okay, so what are these qualifications?

First off, you should know by now that I was upset Jennifer Connelly got supporting, when she should have made it to actress. Though I've since learned that it's the movie producer's faults, that's what I based qualifications on.

Honestly, for the first year, I just looked at different magazines and movie sites to find the best actors, actresses, etc. from each. I then picked a few, and narrowed it down from there. So, this year, I changed it. Using movies.com, I made an extensive list of who each actor was in it. I had a maximum of three people per category, for example, here's the Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers list:

Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Actor: Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Viggo Mortensen
Actress: Miranda Otto, Liv Tyler
Supporting Actor: Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis, Christopher Lee
Supporting Actress: Cate Blanchett
Director: Peter Jackson
Genre: Fantasy, Action-Adventure

Now, as you can see, there were three people per actor category. Since this had many people, I tried to give everyone a chance. For buddy pictures, like Rush Hour, I would put both Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker up in Actor, not one of them in supporting. This way, more people have chances. However, if there truly is one actor who owns the movie, he will be alone. Lord of the Rings was an ensemble film, so there were three people in Actor. Usually, there will be one person for actor, one person for actress, and three each for supporting actor and actress.

After this, I put each movie in their seperate categories, such as putting Lord of the Rings in both Fantasy and Action-Adventure, and all the actors under those same categories. For actors, I only have two categories per each(actor, actress, supporting). So, there are actors for comedy/animated, and then there are actors for drama/fantasy/action/adventure/thriller/crime/drama/biography/documentary/sci-fi/horror. Yes, it's a big category, but wouldn't it seem strange to have all of these, and split them in half? Not all sci-fi belongs in comedy, unless it is stated as that on movies.com. The Adventures of Pluto Nash would be one such example.

What is the time period for qualification, and also voting?

Qualification dates for the first three years were March to February. In the first year, I had initially decided for this in time for the Oscars, so I also included movies from January to March 2002. That way, Guy Pearce was nominated for The Time Machine in the first Edgars. Then for the next two years, I went from March 2002 to March 2003, and March 2003 to February 2004.

After this, I realized that the system was crap, and changed it to January to December, like the Oscars. However, I'd already done January and February 2004, and it would be unfair if, for example, Jim Caviezel was nominated twice. So to fix that mistake, I'm had the 4th Annual Edgars nominees go from March 2004 to December 2004. From now on, every consecutive Edgar year will go from January to December, like the Oscars.

Then the nomination time will be the short weeks from the end of December to the beginning of January. Voting will be from January 2nd till March, whenever the specified date for the Edgars is.

What is the Lorenzo Music Award of Achievement?

The Lorenzo Music Award of Achievement is in honor of Lorenzo Music, the voice behind Carlton, the Doorman on Rhoda, and Garfield the Cat in his TV show. Since Garfield was one of my favorite shows ever, I decided to honor him with this award.

The award itself is random. I put all the movies that qualified for any award in a hat, and choose one. The winners so far have been:

2001-The Princess Diaries
2002-Intacto
2003-Two Men Went to War
2004-to be chosen in March, sorry, it's a year late
2005-also to be chosen in March, on time this time

What is the George Harrison Commemorative Award?

The George Harrison Commemorative Award rewards a movie of special occasion in the year. The award is specially chosen by a select group of people that strive to bring the best movies to recognition.

2005-King Kong for masterfully and gracefully returning to cinematic splendor

What is the Richard Harris Lifetime Achievement Award?

The Richard Harris Lifetime Achievement Award, like the two previous awards is in honor of a famous personality who has passed on. Richard Harris passed on in 2002, and the Edgars dedicated this award to anyone with such an illustrious career as his.

The two recipients:

2002-Sir Richard Attenborough
2003-Clint Eastwood
2004-Dustin Hoffman

Amendment #1(2003)-
In any given year, there may be a change to any nomination, whether it be switching (e.g. switching Catherine Zeta-Jones from Best Actress to Best Supporting Actress for Chicago) or changing (e.g. switching Elijah Wood with Sean Astin for Return of the King or The Jungle Book II with Spirited Away). There is one allowable change per year, and it is due to popular decision, and only allowed by the choice of the creator of these awards.
